Starting the system

To start the system switch the power on (click AUX ON/OFF switch). The terminal wil display the current PC (000000) and the MicroODT prompt (@). You can now enter commands in the terminal to interact with the system.

The system can be booted from the RL02 drive as follows:
  1. Spin up RL02 drive 0 (push LOAD switch)
  2. Wait till drive is spun up (READY light is on)
  3. Type 173000G at the command prompt
The terminal will now display the memory size (30KW) and a "START?" prompt. Type "y" (or "Y") to voot the system. XXDP will start, display some messages and the "." prompt. Type e.g. "R VKAAC0" to run the LSI-11 Basic Instruction Set diagnostic. The "ESC" key emulates the original BREAK key. Press it to return to MicroODT.

Configuration

This system is equipped with the following devices:

  • KD11-NA processor, configured to power-up in ODT mode.
  • MSV11-11 memory with 2 KW word portion of bank 7 enabled.
  • DLV11-J with default base address/vector (0176500/0300), channel 3 configured as console and HALT as break response. Loopback is enabled for channels 0-2 to be able to run DLV11-J diagnostics.
  • RLV11 controller with default address and vector (014400/0160) to which two RL01 drives are attached. The typical spin-up time for this drive is up to 45 seconds, but is kept to a user-friendly 10 seconds in this simulator. Drive 0 contains a bootable image with XXDP, drive 1 is loaded with a scratch disk.
  • BDV11 with the original boot ROMs (045E2/046E2), drive 0 configured as default boot device, CPU and memory tests enabled and entering console dialog on start.

Diagnostics

The simulator should be able to run the following diagnostics without errors:

  • VKAAC0 - LSI-11 Basic Instruction Set Test
  • VKABB0 - EIS Instruction Set Test
  • VKACC1 - FIS Instruction Set Test. This diagnostic produces four one-bit errors. These are caused by slight differences between the PDP-11 and IEEE floating points formats.
  • VKADC1 - LSI-11 Traps Test
  • VRLBC0 - RLV11 Diskless Controller Test
  • ZRLGE0 - RL11/RLV11/RLV12 Controller Test 1. An example run of this diagnostic is shown below.
  • ZRLHB1 - RL11/RLV11/RLV12 Controller Test 2
  • ZRLID1 - RL01/02 Drive Test 1
  • ZRLJC0 - RL01/02 Drive Test 2 (Seek Test)
  • VDLAB0 - DLV11-J Logic Test
